Aeon 14 FAQ

What is Aeon 14?

Aeon 14 is a hard science fiction space opera with 130+ novels spanning time from the first illegal AI awakenings of the near future to galaxy-spanning wars in the 89th century. It's one of the largest internally consistent universes in science fiction, grounded in real science—including a setting where, for the early eras, there is no faster-than-light travel and crossing to a neighboring star takes decades.

Is Aeon 14 hard science fiction or space opera?

Both. It's hard science fiction at space-opera scale. For the early part of the timeline there's no faster-than-light travel, and even after FTL arrives it never works inside a star system—ships still cross a sublight slow zone to reach any world. The science is load-bearing, but the scope and action are pure space opera.

What should I read if I like The Expanse or Bobiverse?

If you love The Expanse, Honor Harrington, or Ringworld, start with the Intrepid Saga for grounded space opera at scale. If you love the AI-consciousness questions of Bobiverse or Murderbot, the Sentience Wars and The Sentience Gradient are squarely your territory.

Where should I start reading Aeon 14?

You can begin at any of three entry points. Outsystem (The Intrepid Saga) is the classic starting place and the heart of the universe. The Tide That Swallowed the World (The Sentience Gradient) is a standalone-friendly, near-future entry that is the current chronological starting point. Lyssa's Dream (The Sentience Wars) follows the period where sentient AIs begin to assert themselves. Rika's Marauders is far future, ground pounding mechanized warrior action. Pick whichever sounds most like your kind of story.

Is the series complete?

Many of the major storylines are complete, so you can read enormous self-contained runs from beginning to end. New books and series are still being added to the universe, so there's always more to explore.

Are there Aeon 14 audiobooks?

Yes. Much of the catalog is available in audio across Audible, Apple Books, Google Play, and Audiobooks.com.

Do I have to read all the books, or read them in order?

No. You don't have to read everything, and you don't have to read in order. The universe is built from many self-contained series with clearly marked starting points—begin with one that appeals to you and branch out from there.

Who writes Aeon 14?

Aeon 14 is created by M. D. Cooper, who has written most of the universe solo and co-written many series with other authors, including James S. Aaron, A.K. DuBoff, Andrew Dobell, L.L. Richman, J.J. Green, T.G. Ayer, Zen DiPietro, and Chris J. Pike.
